WE THOUGHT WE SAW A FIRE

Flames loomed
On our last night together
Past the driveway and over the tree line

We called and no one came
So you
With eyes stinging
Drove us into the glow

The trees were black shapes
They grew taller
Obscuring the sky
And on the other side was nothing

But I
With eyes stinging
Made you drive on
The house so far behind us

Worldly embers could never
Have caught
